Buying a bathtub - what to look out for?

There are several things to look out for in buy a new bath, such as, for example, the depth, width and length of a bath. Selecting a comfortable bath is not easy, which is why it is nice to try out a number of bathtubs before you can make a good choice.

In the Cleopatra showroom in Zaandam, you can try out no less than 25 different models. A number of the bathtubs in our showroom are even filled with water. Testing out a bath has never been easier!

Comfortable bath

When searching for the ideal bathtub, it is of course important that it is a comfortable bath is. The main reason that many bathtubs on the market are not comfortable is that they are not deep enough. Sitting in the bathtub, the water level often does not even reach your chest. As a result, you quickly get cold, or sit in the bath with bent legs. In addition, many contemporary bathtubs are designed to bring out a particular design rather than to provide comfort. This is often at the expense of the shape of both the bathtub and the backrest. For example, many oval-shaped bathtubs offer backrests against which most people cannot properly relax.

Bathtub dimensions and specifications

What are the bathtub dimensions and specifications of a comfortable bathtub? That depends, of course, on your physique and the number of people you wish to lie in the bath with. On average, the specifications below can be considered guidelines:

  • Bath depth or bath height. A depth of at least 50 cm is required to ensure that the body is well submerged. The most comfortable bathtub is a deep bath. This often has a depth of around 60 cm.
  • Bath width. The desired width is very dependent on your physique. Do you want your arms supported by armrests? Then it is important that the bath is not too wide.
  • Bath length. The most common lengths of baths are 160, 170 or 180 cm. Of course it is also possible to find extra short baths with a size of, for example, 150 cm, or extra long baths of, for example, 190 cm.
  • Bath bottom. Most bathtubs have a flat bottom. For the most comfortable effect, however, it is nicer to have an ergonomic floor, where the back is lower than the feet. This prevents your body from sinking: you lie stable and well supported in the bath. Click here to see examples of ergonomic bathtubs. Look carefully at the drawings of the bathtub, paying close attention to the inside dimensions of the bathtub and the bottom length. Some bathtubs have very thick edges, making the bottom much smaller in length and width than the outside dimensions. Also look closely at the exact shape and orientation of the backrest. With freestanding baths the thickness of the bath rim is relevant: with very thin rims (as with most solid surface baths) the neck does not lie comfortably against the bath rim and therefore it is also possible to install a neck cushion there.

Bathtub 2 persons

A bath 2 persons? In the case of a rectangular bathtub, this means that you are lying opposite each other. This means that you need a fairly wide bathtub (at least 80 cm) and that the bathtub should be fairly long (at least 180 cm), i.e. a bath 80×180. Corner baths are also often suitable for two people (for example, with size 150 x 150 cm). In many models one can then lie side by side.

Buy recessed bathtub vs. freestanding bathtub

A built-in bathtub is one whose exterior is not finished. This means that the outside of the bath must be covered, often with a tiled wall. Sometimes it is possible to buy matching side panels.

A freestanding bathtub is one that can stand freely in a room. This can be a bathtub on legs Be or a bathtub directly on the floor. You can also buy a freestanding bathtub that is on one or two sides against the wall.

Main differences between a freestanding and a built-in bath

The choice of a freestanding bath or a built-in bath is a matter of taste, budget and desired comfort. The main differences between the two types of baths are in brief:

  • Since freestanding baths are finished on the outside, they are often more expensive than built-in baths. However, the installation of built-in bathtubs is easier than assembling built-in bathtubs that require finishing.
  • Freestanding bathtubs stand alone in the room, which often gives them a nice 'look'. Therefore, pay attention to the areas around the bath: might these get dirty or wet easily?
  • Freestanding baths are less deep than built-in baths. Even the deepest freestanding bath (around 45 cm max) is much less deep than the deepest built-in bathtubs (around 60 cm). Less depth means that the body will not be fully submerged, which can result in less comfort. Also, the edges of freestanding baths are usually sharper than those of built-in baths, which can result in less comfort for the neck. In addition, many neck pillows cannot be placed in freestanding baths (this is the case with freestanding baths with very thin edges). In general, therefore, one chooses a freestanding bath if the design of the bathroom is paramount. If comfort in the bath is paramount, then a built-in bath is usually chosen.
  • Would you like a bathtub with a whirlpool system? Then be aware that the options are more limited with freestanding baths than with built-in baths. Click here for freestanding whirlpool baths.

Of course, there is also a difference between freestanding baths and built-in baths when it comes to the install a bath. This should also be taken into account when choosing.

Bathtub material and colors

Traditionally, bathtubs have been made of white acrylic because this material is soft and warm to the touch, insulates well, is water-resistant, easy to clean and can be processed on rounded shapes. Why white? Because it is a neutral color; ideal for the production of large volume baths. The disadvantage of acrylic is that in production it is quite difficult to mix colors in it that remain good even in rounded areas.

The acrylic used in bathtubs is gloss. To generate a different look, manufacturers of bathtubs have been looking for materials that are not glossy. This is how solid surface and other similar composites have been discovered. Solid surface baths are usually white in color (although black is sold more and more) with a brilliant soft finish. Also, with solid surface it becomes possible to make different bathtubs than with acrylic. This is why solid surface baths are very much in vogue these days.

In addition to acrylic and solid surface, you can buy bathtubs in other materials, such as steel or wood.

Acrylic bath or solid surface bath

Although solid surface is a popular material for bathtubs, it also comes with some drawbacks:

  • Weight: A standard solid surface bathtub with dimensions 180 x 80 cm usually weighs between 200 and 300 kg. This is too much for many upper floors and also for some floor types.
  • Very thin edges that are uncomfortable for the neck and also there is often no possibility to place a neck pillow.
  • Vulnerability: Thin solid surface bath edges are quite fragile and can be damaged relatively easily.
  • Maintenance: Solid surface does not withstand intensive cleaning. Therefore, these baths are often not used in public environments, such as hotels.
  • Price: Solid surface baths are significantly more expensive than comparable baths made of acrylic.

Bathtub with whirlpool system

What is a bathtub with a whirlpool system? Whirlpool systems are designed to have an effect on both the body and the mind, by stimulating the nervous system with air bubbles from the bathtub floor and/or actively massaging the muscles with streams of water from the sides (and sometimes even the bottom) of the bathtub.

Another type of system is Cleopatra's O2 system, in which oxygen is sent into the bath for the purpose of obtaining more energy.

Unfortunately, there are also many differences in the quality of different whirlpool systems. For example, there are systems with water flows that are too soft, too noisy, or controls that are unreliable (be especially careful with pneumatic controls).

Our advice to avoid disappointment: test the whirlpool system before you buy it! Furthermore, make sure you select a supplier that offers good service when buying a bathtub.

Buy taps for a bathtub

When buying faucets for a bathtub, you basically have two choices: faucets that are mounted in the wall or faucets that are mounted on the bathtub rim. The latter option is usually not possible with freestanding bathtubs. The advantage of taps on the rim is that there are no holes to be drilled in your wall. For the rest it is mainly a matter of taste.
